We expect our relationships to sail through a host of important life changes: courtship, becoming a couple, setting up home together, early parenthood, dealing with adolescents, empty nesting, retirement and possibly grandparenting, too. But each new life stage brings tricky challenges, moments that can threaten even the most secure marriage. As a clinical psychologist, I have been working with individuals, families and couples for more than 35 years and I have developed a unique approach which, if practised regularly, can have a life-changing effect on any union. It is the key to keeping your relationship healthy — and breathing new life into a troubled one. For my version of CPR to work effectively, you need to get into the habit of regularly taking the pulse of your relationship. The status of any union can change quickly, but reviewing it every six months allows you to think about what you both want and consider any adjustments. Being honest with yourself is a great starting point for positive change, but you also need to be confident there is sufficient life still pumping through your relationship to make engaging in CPR a safe and worthwhile process.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including a heart attack or near drowning, in which someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped. The American Heart Association recommends that everyone — untrained bystanders and medical personnel alike — begin CPR with chest compressions. It’s far better to do something than to do nothing at all if you’re fearful that your knowledge or abilities aren’t percent complete. Remember, the difference between your doing something and doing nothing could be someone’s life.
The above advice applies to adults, children and infants needing CPR, but not newborns infants up to 4 weeks old. CPR can keep oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and other vital organs until more definitive medical treatment can restore a normal heart rhythm. When the heart stops, the lack of oxygenated blood can cause brain damage in only a few minutes. A person may die within eight to 10 minutes.
